to the standard immunosuppressive treatment demonstrating its limitations and the current unmet need of, at least, similarly effective and less toxic treatment. To illustrate the close connection between a better understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease and targeted treatment, the papers on the pathogenesis of ANCA-associated vasculitis [2] , lupus nephritis [3] , the role of anti-PLA2R antibodies [4] in membranous nephropathy and complement in membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis [5] precede the articles dedicated to the treatment of secondary [6–8] and primary glomerulonephritides [9–11] . The final contribution opens new horizons by reviewing the emerging biologic treatments [12] . We hope you enjoy this introduction to the complex area of the pathogenesis and targeted treatment of glomerular disease and that this information will contribute to greater awareness, earlier diagnosis and referral, better treatment and improved outcome for patients with immune-mediated glomerular diseases. The classification of glomerular disease has been based almost entirely on renal histology, but an increasing understanding of the pathogenesis is now introducing change relevant to the development of newer therapies. The introduction of corticosteroid and immunosuppressive drugs undoubtedly improved the outcome of patients with many forms of nephrotic syndrome, lupus nephritis and ANCA-associated vasculitis, but this non-specific treatment has been associated with serious shortand long-term toxicity, especially in patients with frequently relapsing disease. During the last 10 years, new biologic (targeted) treatment has expanded our therapeutic armamentarium, especially in refractory, relapsing or intolerant patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis, lupus nephritis and less commonly for other glomerular diseases. This special topic section of Nephron Clinical Practice provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the widening area of biologic treatments in an increasing number of glomerular diseases. A Potential Treatment Strategy for the Treatment of Diabetic Kidney Disease in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats: Leptadenia hastata Extract
Background: Kidney disorders are serious outcomes of diabetes, resulting in renal ailments. This study seeks to provide an alternative treatment for the disorder through the use of medicinal plants that offer renal protection and ameliorate the deleterious effect of diabetes. Methods: Thirty rats were divided into six groups of five and hyperglycemia was induced by intraperitoneal injection ...
متن کاملشیوع نفروپاتی IgA در بیماران مبتلا به گلومرولونفریت اولیه
During a 14-month period (Dec. 1990-Jan. 1992) , renal biopsies were performed on 105 patients with suspected glomerular disease. All specimens were processed for light microscopy (L.M) and immunoflourescence. Work-up revealed 21 patients to suffer a systemic glomerular disease and glomerular disease was found to be primery in 85 cases. Predominant IgG deposition was noted in 71 cases with prim...
متن کاملThe efficacy of camel milk and Tarangabin (manna of Alhagi maurorum( combination therapy on glomerular filtration rate in patients with chronic kidney disease: A randomized controlled trial
Objective: This study was designed to investigate the effect of camel milk and Tarangabin (manna of Alhagi maurorum) combination therapy in addition to conventional treatments in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Material and Methods: Forty-four patients of 15 to 70 years old, with CKD due to hypertension or diabetes, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 15–60 ml...
متن کاملStudy of chronic effect of Losartan in inhibition of kidney glomerular number and glomerular volume changes in uninephrectomized diabetic rats(Stereological study).
Background: Diabetic nephropathy is one of the cause of the end stage of renal disease (ESRD). Hyperglicemia activate intrarenal Renin-Angiotensin system and highly AngiotensinII is produced locally in glomeruli. In this research AT1(Angiotensin type 1) receptors blocked by Losartan and effects of this drug in inhibition of renal structural lesions were assessed quantitatively. Materials & me...
متن کاملAmelioration of metabolic acidosis in patients with low GFR reduced kidney endothelin production and kidney injury, and better preserved GFR.
Metabolic acidosis often accompanies low glomerular filtration rate and induces secretion of endothelin, which in turn might mediate kidney injury. Here we tested whether treatment of metabolic acidosis in patients with low glomerular filtration rate reduced the progression of kidney disease. Fifty-nine patients with hypertensive nephropathy and metabolic acidosis had their blood pressure reduc...
